It’s all started just after the second month of the lock down from our honorable President Cyril Ramaphosa. Since the beginning of the lock down the Bidair employees at the OR Tambo International Airport received the UIF only once. Currently they’re facing a retrenchment which most of them are calling it illegal labor practice.
Below is the letter from Bidvest to the employees.
Dear colleagues,
As South Africa prepares to transition from a Level 5 to a Level 4 Covid-19 lockdown, we would like to begin by thanking all of you for your strength and endurance during this challenging time. We trust that you and your families are safe and healthy as we look forward to a slow easing of restrictions on social and economic activity.
Bidvest Group Covid-19 Employee Fund
We would also like to take this opportunity to advise you that we have set up a fund to minimise the impact of the lockdown on those of you who have been unable to work during the Level 5 lockdown, as well as on those of you who may still not be able to work when Level 4 comes into effect on Friday, 1 May.
Covid-19 has created an unprecedented crisis for countries and businesses all around the world and even a diversified group like ours isn’t immune to its impact. As one of the largest employers in South Africa, we nevertheless recognise that our people are our most valuable asset and we know how important it is to assist you as best as we can at this time.
Some of you have been able to continue working during the initial lockdown period and have, of course, been paid as usual. Those of you who will be able to continue working or who will now be able to return to work in terms of the Level 4 restrictions, will be paid as usual in May.
Income Security for staff
Unfortunately, approximately three-quarters of Bidvest’s employees across the group have been unable to work during the Level 5 lockdown period and only some additional staff will be able to return to work on 1 May. This has naturally led to great uncertainty about income security in April and in the coming months.
The Board and Group Executive Committee are deeply aware of the stress this has caused for both employees and their families and have been urgently seeking ways to minimise the impact of the lockdown on staff who have been unable to work since 27 March and who may still not be able to work once restrictions ease.
As part of our response to a situation that no one could have anticipated, we have therefore allocated R400 million to a newly established employee relief fund called the Bidvest Group Covid-19 Employee Fund. This will be used to supplement UIF payments in April and in the coming months to cushion the impact COVID-19 lockdown may have had on you and your families.
This will be done in two ways.
Firstly, as we have previously communicated, all employees who have been unable to work during the initial lockdown period will receive a payment of R2 000 each from the Fund.
Secondly, each company within the group will apply for UIF payments on behalf of the staff who qualify for UIF support. Payment for the month of April will be made as soon as each company receives these funds and the corresponding documentation from the UIF.
Together, the payment from the employee fund and the payment from the UIF will limit as much as possible the loss of income for approximately 90% of staff who have been unable to work during the first phase of the lockdown.
For staff who are unable to work in May, the same benefits will apply.
Further, in order to boost the Covid-19 Employee Fund, members of the Bidvest Board will be taking a 30% pay cut and members of the Group Executive Committee will be taking a 40% pay cut.
The Covid-19 pandemic is a crisis we all have to face together, and each of us needs to play our part to secure incomes and the long-term sustainability of the group.
Divisional support
In addition to these measures, the Group Board and Executive Committee have agreed to establish similar funds at divisional and subsidiary levels, which will be used to provide for the humanitarian needs of the staff in those divisions. This initiative is intended to ease the transition between the various lockdown phases as some group companies will be able to return to partial operations as from 1 May, while others will not.
South Africa was already in a very difficult economic situation prior to the Covid-19 crisis, but we are doing everything possible to steer a steady course through this added challenge.
We care about you, our staff, and the wellbeing of both you and your families. Please be assured that we are making every effort to soften the blow of the Covid-19 lockdown and have committed to processing all financial benefits as promptly and efficiently as possible. We will naturally continue to do everything in our power to weather this storm and to ensure that we all emerge from the Covid-19 crisis even stronger than we were before.
For now, keep safe and stay well.
Kind regards,

The question is ,what is it that the president is doing to help his fellow south african and her land [Bidair employees]. The president has the powers right! if he alone is capable of stopping the sale of alcohol with immediate effect then how can he fail to do the immediate effect on UIF funds for the Bidvest employees.
